Four Modesto police officers arrive at the Peterson home on Christmas Eve 2002 to investigate the disappearance of eight-months-pregnant Lacy Peterson. They find the house orderly with a Christmas tree, baby clothes, and a phone book open to a criminal defense attorney specializing in murder.

He woke around 8 a.m., watched Martha Stewart with Lacy, and decided to go fishing instead of golfing due to the cold. He claims he left around 9:30 a.m., drove to his warehouse, hooked up a boat, and traveled 90 miles to Berkeley Marina.

He returned home at 4:45 p.m., found the dog with its leash on, did laundry, and ate pizza before calling his mother-in-law at 5:15 p.m. to ask if Lacy was there.

Scott paused before stating Lacy was missing, a word choice she found strange given Lacy's pregnancy and plans.

He initially claims he went golfing but changes his story to fishing when confronted by Lacy's stepfather.

Nine thirty or ten o'clock in the morning is way too late for fishing, he says.

He agrees to a polygraph but cancels after his father advises against it.

Detectives and prosecutors argue Scott was still home at 9:48 a.m. based on a Martha Stewart segment, leaving only 28 minutes before a neighbor found the dog loose.

The defendants strangled Lacy Peterson on the night of December 23rd or the morning of December 24th.

They theorize Scott strangled or suffocated Lacy on the bed, wrapped her in a tarp, and used patio umbrellas to conceal her body in the truck.

Investigators find a homemade concrete anchor in Scott's boat and evidence he made at least four weights using a water pitcher and mallet. They believe Scott used these weights to sink Lacy's body in the San Francisco Bay near Brooks Island.

Police track Scott returning to the marina three times without the boat and sitting near the ramp looking at the water. He also moves the boat cover to a shed and places a leaking leaf blower on top, while wiretaps capture him whistling after learning a sonar scan found only an anchor.

He claims he cut himself reaching into his truck toolbox.

She observes a line of cuts across all four knuckles, contradicting Scott's claim of a single injury.
